<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - Pixie Was the Magic. Ozzie is the Healing</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was 15, my heart met its very first best friend, a tiny, silver-dappled dachshund x miniature pinscher named Pixie. Her eyes were a warm, soulful brown, with the faintest touch of blue in the corner of her left one, as if the sky had kissed her just before she arrived in this world. I had spent years hoping, searching, dreaming of the perfect dog. Then, one ordinary evening while out with my family, I got a call from a woman named Marie — a voice I didn’t recognise, but one that would change my life forever. “Are you still looking for a puppy?” she asked. My heart skipped. I didn’t even hesitate. “Yes.” Two weeks later, we drove out to Vanderbijlpark, and I met Pixie for the first time. She was smaller than my phone, lighter than a feather, just 640 grams of pure love and magic. From that moment, she came everywhere with me: restaurants, road trips, late-night walks. She was my world. But magic can be fleeting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For a while, I struggled with the guilt. He felt like a “replacement,” and I hated that. I didn't want to betray Pixie’s memory. But the thing is, Ozzie wasn’t a replacement. He was the rainbow after the storm. He didn’t try to be her. He just stayed. He loved me in the quiet. He healed me, one cuddle at a time. Months passed, and slowly, we became inseparable. He was with me through everything — breakups, family changes, even my parents’ divorce. When I had to leave for a month-long trip overseas to Vietnam and Qatar, my heart ached every day. I counted the hours. And when I came back, he clung to me like I was the only thing that mattered in the world. Because to him, I am.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - Pixie Was the Magic. Ozzie is the Healing</image:title>
<image:caption>That night, through tears and grief, I messaged Marie again. I just needed something, a photo of Pixie's siblings, a sign, anything. She replied to tell me Pixie’s father had just had a new litter with a different mother. And something in my heart stirred. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I could love another dog. But my friend’s dad, feeling partly responsible, offered to get me one of the puppies. The next day, we made the drive. I held him, this tiny brown bean of a dachshund, and I felt... numb. We went to the vet. He weighed just 800 grams. He didn’t say much (obviously), but that night he curled up right next to my head and didn’t move. He stayed like that, as if he knew. As if he knew I was broken and needed someone who wouldn’t ask questions, wouldn’t talk, ‘just be there.’</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - How Jock Found his Pack….</image:title>
<image:caption>I rocked up at my current home on 11th November 2020 straight from the vet and with a cone on. These silly hoomans didn’t understand my needs, even though they had ridgebacks before! I had severe anxiety and in particular separation anxiety. Well what do you expect when I had lived my life in a yard and then I was abandoned. I couldn’t control my feelings so continually grabbed at my new hoomans arms, bruising them badly! It took weeks for me to learn this was unacceptable and for them to understand my triggers. Medication and structure helped me. I wouldn’t go into the garden unless ‘they’ came with me. I had trust issues and was afraid of being locked outside again. I also wouldn’t go on walks outside. I didn’t even want to wear a leash or harness. Even getting into a car was a challenge for the fear of being moved again. It took months for me to learn that a car meant exciting adventures! Now I love it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - How Jock Found his Pack….</image:title>
<image:caption>Due to my anxiety still I can’t be left home alone. Someone always has to be with me. I’m thankfully now off my meds and my hoomans have said they see a massive change for the better in me this year. I’m more relaxed. I’m home. I’ve overcome so many challenges and am loving life. I love soft toys and my favorite place is the beach where I am a pro at crab hunting. Ok, I’m not allowed to catch and shake their legs off but I sure do try!</image:caption>

<image:caption>During Covid my original hoomans moved house and decided not to take me with. A neighbour heard me howl in the yard, (I’m an amazing howler for attention) so fed me. She eventually took me in and soon after I was sent to a vet to get my man bits chopped off. Sadly because I used to be extremely boisterous and was not friends with that hooman's furbabies, I wasn't allowed to return. I was on my way to a shelter when a nice lady called Antonette from 'SA Ridgeback Networking Group' was contacted. She assisted by finding me a safe place where I could stay a few nights... and here I am.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I was little, I used to dream of having a puppy to be my best friend — but my parents were always worried about my allergies. Then, the day before my ninth birthday, they told me they had a surprise. We drove for over an hour, and when we arrived, a lady handed me a tiny black fluff ball. In that moment, I realised she had just handed me my best friend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Since that night, my dog has never left my side. She’s been there for every moment — the good, the bad, and everything in between — always offering tail wags and face smooches when I needed them most. She’s now 9 years old, and I’m so grateful for every year we’ve shared. From camping trips to cosy movie nights, we’ve built a lifetime of memories — and we’re nowhere near done. A dog truly is man’s best friend — and she’s mine for life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From that moment on, everything changed. Vacations became pet-friendly getaways. Saturdays turned into dog training sessions. And our free time? It became Charlie time—exploring, adventuring, and simply being together. This is the life I had yearned for. A life with more love, more laughter, and more purpose. Charlie completes us. He keeps us grounded, brings us joy, and shows us every day what unconditional love really means. In fact, he’s even part of the reason we recently moved to Cape Town. We saw an opportunity to embrace a more adventurous, pet-friendly lifestyle—complete with sundowner beach walks and weekend hikes. What more could you want in life?</image:caption>

<image:caption>The answer was a resounding yes—even if we weren’t actively searching at that exact moment. For months, my husband and I had been dreaming of adding a pup to our lives as newlyweds. I longed for that extra heartbeat in the house, and my nurturing, cuddle-loving heart was ready to care for something other than my husband (haha). I replied instantly: “YES!” I didn’t ask about the breed, age, or background. All I knew was that I was ready to give a dog all the love I had to offer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Later that night, my mom sent a photo and explained her friend was helping someone rehome a dog. And would you believe it—a red merle Australian Shepherd with striking ocean-blue eyes. The kind of eyes that speak straight to your soul. For months, Aussies had been our dream breed. We had fallen in love with their intelligence, loyalty, and energy. In fact, our extended family already had six of them. It felt like a sign. To my complete surprise, my mom showed up that very night... with him in her arms. The moment I saw him, I cried. He was perfect. He had a different name back then, but when I looked into those bright blue eyes, I knew—he was our Charlie.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One morning, we got the news that "Red" was being separated from the litter because he was doing the worst. He needed to be placed on a feeding tube. To say I was broken is an understatement. For 10 days, “Red” remained critical, slowly fighting his way back, while the rest of the litter started to improve and were allowed to leave the vet one by one. Due to it being Christmas time and many new owners and fosters were away, I took in the puppies as they were discharged from the vet, keeping them safe until they could join their forever homes. Of the 5, I placed 3 with their new families, 1 remained fostered with me and "Red," was still fighting for his life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Within 2 or 3 days of the 3 pups settling into their new homes, we received devastating news: they had all passed away. Having loved and cared for each of them, I cried and cried. My hope for "Red" surviving began to diminish and I have my family to thank for the endless teary phone calls as I was going through this all. New Year's came and went. I said goodbye to the last little one I had been fostering, sending him off to a wonderful family where he still thrives today. I managed to see him again at their neutering operations and he was gorgeous. Pictured is the other pup to survive whilst staying with me</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - And Then There was Moby</image:title>
<image:caption>Over Christmas in December 2018, Spaniel Welfare received a litter of pups, just 3 or 4 weeks old, who had been brought in from a township, along with their mother. Thankfully, one of the incredible foster moms took them all in, giving them a safe space to adapt and grow together. Sadly, it wasn't that simple. All five of the babies had contracted Parvovirus from the conditions they were born into and had to be treated at the vet for several weeks. They spent one week back with their foster mom and dog mom before getting sick again and returning to the vet. By then, each of the babies had already been matched with future owners, so we were getting daily updates on how they were doing. Moby was known as “Red”, after the colour of his little collar.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As he grew and strangers saw his "aggression" and "reactivity" and even suggested behavioural euthanasia, it was never a consideration to give up on this boy after all he went through. His behaviours did bring IMMENSE stress for me and total paralysis on how to handle him, plus the codependence developed during COVID, I was at a total loss. HOWEVER, he is now turning 7 this year and the growth and confidence I have seen in him is incredible! We keep showing up - imperfect, a little out of step with the world around us - but moving forward together remains one of the greatest achievements of my life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In life we have these brief moments of joy that change your life forever. I adopted a beautiful puppy called Meatball. She is such a joyful girl with the best personality. She could fill up any room she was in. I worked really late nights and anyone who works those ungodly hours can relate when the night starts and the complex quietens down, things can get lonely.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A little while after getting Mia, I started my business and we made the move back home to Joburg - ready to begin a brand-new adventure together. We kept sharing our journey on the Dog Love SA account, and before long, we’d connected with a whole new crew of JHB and PTA dog moms. It felt like finding my people - a community of like-minded souls who, just like me, were looking for connection, laughter, and shared love for our four-legged companions. Mia and I hosted a few Dog Instameets where online friendships turned into real ones, and some of those meet ups led me to the most important people in my life today - even eight years later. To all the original dog moms who showed up, supported, and believed in what I was building: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. You helped turn a little idea into something truly meaningful.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mia and I are back at it - continuing to share the Dog Love SA message after a few pauses over the years. Through it all, she’s remained the most beautiful reminder of who I am, and who I’m still becoming. Mia has taught me what it means to be fiercely independent and unapologetically myself. Despite looking like the world’s cuddliest teddy bear, if she’s not in the mood to be your perfect little lap dog, she won’t be - and that’s exactly the kind of boundary-setting I’ve learned to admire. She’s shown me how to be vocal, bold, and to take up space - no matter my size, presence, or the room I walk into.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - How This All Began…</image:title>
<image:caption>The story of Dog Love SA began in Cape Town, in a little apartment I shared with my university roommate and her once-in-a-lifetime Cocker Spaniel, Winnie. Winnie wasn’t just a dog. Gentle, wise, and always watching over us in her own way. She had a bond with her mom that was unlike anything I’d ever witnessed; quiet, deep, and soul-level. Winnie has since crossed the rainbow bridge, and while I still feel her absence, I know the space she’s left in her mom’s heart is immeasurable. She was her anchor, her companion, and her soul dog in the truest sense. In many ways, watching their bond unfold planted the seed in me to find that kind of connection too. That’s when the idea of getting my own Cocker Spaniel - and this whole journey - truly began.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - How This All Began…</image:title>
<image:caption>I can say with absolute confidence that Mia is the dog she is today because of Winnie - because of her calm, gentle spirit and the way she welcomed Mia into the world with such grace. Those first six months were magic, and I’ll always be grateful to Winnie for gifting Mia the softest start in life - and for showing me what true canine love looks like. It was during that time that I began documenting their days - the small moments, the big feelings - and started this Instagram account to share their adventures and connect with other dog lovers in Cape Town. What I never expected was how those early connections would become lifelong friendships. Most, if not all, of those original people are still in my life today, and you know exactly who you are.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A few years later, Mia and I did a road trip back to Cape Town to reconnect with some of the OG pups we first met through the account. Her very first bestie? The one and only Cali (@goldengirlcalibear), pictured here - the one who taught Mia how to leap into the water without hesitation, chasing after balls (or literally any object) like it was her life’s purpose. Cali’s mom has become one of my favourite humans on this planet. Her unwavering kindness, love, and support - for me, my journey, and my most authentic self - has meant more than I could ever put into words. Even though she’s now living on the other side of the world, that connection has never faded. Thank you, always. <3</image:caption>

<image:caption>Today, Nachie has blossomed into a beautiful confident dog who loves going for long walks in nature, who loves digging for moles, who loves people. Last year she learnt to swim at the ripe age of 7 – yes, a springer spaniel that only learnt to swim at 7 (she had hip replacement surgery that also changed her but that is a whole other story… all I can say is that she’s very clearly no longer in pain from her hip dysplasia has given this girl a new leash on life). This June will be 6 years since Nachie came home to live with me. I can confidently say that she’s the love of my life, she’s my soul dog, she’s truly my best friend. And every day I wonder how lucky I am that she found me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - The Perfect Pair</image:title>
<image:caption>It was Thursday Morning 13 June 2019 at 11:25am when a black and white springer spaniel arrived at my home from The Spaniel Welfare. I know it's weirdly specific to remember the exact time she arrived but that day and all the details involving it changed everything for me for the rest of my life... See, we didn't do any introductions or meet ups before she arrived at my home… 13 June 2019 was the day I met her for the first time and the day she found her forever home. I look back at the photos from that day and I want to cry because my little girl must have been so scared. Nacho, then called Roxy, was 2.5 years old when she came to live with me. I was her third home… It still breaks me to think that she had been rehomed three times by the time she was just over 2 years old. I still don’t understand why she was rehomed in the first place because she’s the sweetest, most well behaved dog I have ever met.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - The Perfect Pair</image:title>
<image:caption>But, I digress… The first two weeks were difficult. I remember Googling NUMEROUS times "how long does it take to bond with a rescue?"... See, I had this dream of getting a dog that can go everywhere with me and do all things with me. But Nacho (aka Nachie aka Nachie-Noo aka Noodles) is a reactive dog – I have no idea where it stems from or how she got to be like this; I know almost nothing about her past. All I knew was that busy places and other dogs were her worst nightmare. She’s also fearful of driving in a car. In short, Nachie was the antithesis of the dog I had dreamt of for so many years. I had to shift my expectations drastically. I had a session with one of the world’s best behaviorists (my opinion because she’s truly a gem and always advocates for the animal) roughly 10 days after Nachie came to live with me. And she helped me adjust my view and get my mindset in the right place. She made me aware of what Nachie needed over what I wanted… This was a huge turning point for how I view dogs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - The Perfect Pair</image:title>
<image:caption>We so often want dogs to do stuff WE want, but never think about whether it’s something that they’re comfortable with. To this day, this is the biggest lesson I’ve learnt in adopting Nachie. Once the behaviorist guided me on how to be the dog mom Nachie needed, this girl had my heart. More so, she changed me forever… She broke down so many walls I had built up through the hard knocks of life. She's taught me about unconditional love and that anyone is capable of change if nurtured with love – she made my heart expand with a love I didn’t even know it could hold. She also taught me about patience, resilience and that being silly is really the best medicine after a long, tough day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - Healing Paws: The Silas Life</image:title>
<image:caption>I was told by my psychiatrist at the time that service dog would be an option (as a last resort). I had never thought that they made service dogs for mental illnesses (mostly only educated about guide dogs) and I am (and was) a very passionate animal lover and advocate. I decided that I’d try this option and go forward with it. Starting the process I was very uneducated and started on a budget (I was barely out of highschool, and my parents didn’t really get it).</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories: Who Rescued Who? - Healing Paws: The Silas Life</image:title>
<image:caption>I rescued a dog from a welfare, Silas, who is a Labrador x Border Collie cross. He had amazing temperament, was absolutely perfect for the job. I researched owner training and got a private trainer to assist me in tasks and obedience. Over time, I got extremely obsessed with dog training and it became every day that I was watching training videos, training outside and inside and trying several different techniques. We trained in pet friendly places and stores first before going into our first public access outing. I was extremely nervous and before this I had NEVER gone outside.</image:caption>
